JAMES THOMAS RICHARDSON
Newcastle born and bred, Bykers own artist son.
James’ passion for art first surfaced at a young age where he would often draw on the streets of his home town in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne. One of James’ earliest memories of his art was a piece drawn on the underside of his family kitchen table depicting spitfires and other era related works. Little did James know, at this age, that his passion ran through his veins and he may have inherited it from generations before his time. Thomas Miles Richardson, Royal Academy Artist, is an ancestor of James. Thomas Miles, and his son Thomas Miles Junior, were great artists in their time. With works shown by the Royal Academy and purchased and exhibited by local galleries. The Richardson’s themselves come from a long line of artists, some of which have been extremely successful in their time and exhibited a great number of pieces.
James left school in 1955 and began to study life drawing, design and art for reproduction at the college of art and industrial design, this was a 3 year course that James had to sadly give up when his mother passed. He took up work and neglected painting for over 15 years. By chance, all these years later, James was contacted by the queens artist Petro Annigoni. They became great friends and he agreed to mentor James to rekindle his love for art. James continued working as a BT Telephone Engineer. He was commissioned to paint the telephone manager P.I Docherty and from this followed yet another commission to paint the Pipe Major Peter Lambert B.E.M. James was in hospital receiving surgery at the time of the paintings presentation, it was presented by H.R.H Princess Margret at Blagdon Hall in 1987. The operation forced an early retirement, meaning James had time to begin painting again. Following this James was asked to pain the Lord Major of Newcastle Upon Tyne Arthur C Cook, this commission hangs in the mansion house in Jesmond.
Alongside art, James’ other passion was showing dogs. He bred and showed his own Shetland Sheep Dogs in local contests, and even crufts, for a number of years. From the back of this James began painting pet portraits and became well known amongst breeders and fellow dog lovers alike. James has pet commissions in a number of countries including Australia, Netherlands, France, Portugal and the USA. His Hans Cavalier Dog was shown on the side of a building in Times Sq. New York, USA. James has since received the Hamilton Ford Award of Excellence, the Golden Brush Award and many other online awards for excellence in the artistic industry.
